11 Feb 2026On 11 February 2026 Derbyshire County Council debated 'Motion 3 – Asylum hotels in Derbyshire', moved by Councillor Maginnis, whose background paper cited 565 asylum-seeking men housed in hotels across Chesterfield, Derby and Erewash and stated all Derbyshire MPs had 'pledged to end the use of asylum hotels but no progress has been made'. [1][2][3]

11 Feb 2026The motion, carried on a recorded vote 38 votes to 5, resolved that the Council Leader write to Derbyshire's MPs seeking 'a clear and public timeline for when all Asylum Hotels will no longer be used to house asylum seekers', and to Derbyshire's borough and district councils asking them to go no further than the statutory minimum in housing people leaving asylum hotels — including not placing them in Houses in Multiple Occupation where there is no local connection.
